Walton Goggins (Fallout, The Hateful Eight) has signed on to star opposite Amber Midthunder (Prey, Novocaine) in the action thriller Painter, which has been acquired by 20th Century Studios and is executive produced by James Cameron.
The project is from John Wick creator Derek Kolstad, with longtime stunt coordinator Garrett Warren set to direct in his feature debut.
story
Painter follows a young woman who has been trained since childhood and must use all her skills to save her father who has been kidnapped. Midthunder, who led 20th Century’s 2022 Predator film Prey, will play the daughter, while Goggins will play the father. Reacher star Alan Ritchson was originally rumored to play the father, but he had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts.
behind the camera
Warren makes the jump to directing after years working as a stunt and second-unit specialist, with credits on Cameron’s previous two Avatar films, Logan, and this year’s Road House reboot. Kolstad is writing and producing with manager Josh Adler, and Drew Simon and Sam Speiser are producing for FilmNation’s Infrared Pictures.
Originally purchased by FilmNation at AFM last fall, the project caught Cameron’s attention and he decided to bring it to 20th Century Studios. Goggins and Warren previously shared the set of Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln, adding another small connection to the film.
cast on roll
Midthunder continues to build on his post-Prey resume, most recently starring in Paramount’s Novocaine with Jack Quaid and A24’s Opus with Ayo Edebiri and John Malkovich. Her upcoming credits include Prime Video’s Carrie, based on the Stephen King novel, and Tombs, a multigenerational drama about a Native American family.
Goggins is in the midst of a big year, including the Emmy-nominated Season 3 of The White Lotus, the finale of The Jewels of Justice, the SXSW drama The Uninvited (directed by his wife Nadia Connors), and his return as Ghoul in Season 2 of Fallout, which hits Amazon on December 17th.
No release date has been set for The Painter yet, but with a high-profile duo, stunt veterans at the helm, and Cameron at the masthead, it’s sure to be a film to keep an eye on.
