The official US trailer for The Secret Agent, the award-winning political thriller directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho (Aquarius, Bacurau), has arrived. The film, which just opened at Cannes, where Wagner Moura (Narcos, Civil War) won Best Actor and Filho won Best Director, has serious momentum. Watch the trailer above and read the gist.
A story set in Brazil’s turbulent past
The film returns to 1977 Brazil, which was in the midst of a military dictatorship. Moura plays Marcelo, a widower and fugitive tech expert who arrives in Recife during Carnival week hoping to reunite with his son. Festivities are on a wave of fear. Marcelo is soon caught between being a hired gun, the weight of his past, and a resistance movement trying to carve out a future.
The supporting cast includes Carlos Francisco, Tania María, María Fernanda Candido, Robério Diogenes, Alice Carvalho, Gabriel Leone, Elmira Guedes, Udo Chia, and Isabel Zur.
Festival accolades and Oscar ambitions
Cannes was decisive. Moura won Best Actor, Mendonça Filho won Best Director, and the International Federation of Critics Award for Best Picture. Brazil subsequently selected the film as an entry for the 2026 International Feature Oscar. Critics were on his side throughout the festival. As of this writing, the film has an impressive 98% on Rotten Tomatoes.
