“Monster: The Ed Gein Story” trailer: Charlie Hannham as a killer inspired by “Psycho” and “Texas Chainsaw Massacar”

Netflix has announced a tense teaser trailer for the monsters. Ed Gain Story, the third season of the Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan anthology, previously gave the Jeff Leadermer Story and the story of Lyle and Eric Menendez. This time, Edward Theodore Gain, also known as the “Plainfield Butcher.” Check out the teaser trailer above and read the essentials.

Teaser

A tense teaser sees police at Gain’s farmhouse and sees their torches illuminating some horrors. Film director Alfred Hitchcock (played by Tom Hollander) says, “What shock did you most shock about him? What was his childhood?” Gein loosely inspired the Norman Bates character in Hitchcock’s Psycho. In fact, the film’s memorable serial killers are inspired by Jane, including Leatherface from Texas Chainsaw Massakle, Silence from Buffalo Bill in the Rams, and Garland Green from Conaea.

A more unsettling slice of footage continues until the murderer speaks to his mother, Augusta Gain (played by Laurie Metcalf). “You’re working too fast!” she cried. “Sorry, mom,” he replies, working the needles and threads. The trailer ends with a nightmare image. Gain wearing a female face.

How Hannam landed it (and built it)

Hannam says the role found him in an unexpected meeting with Murphy. “Ryan arrived at our meeting and said he was just caught up in a creative tailwind,” he told Tudum. “And this has united us with a really deep, emotional and engaging conversation about Ed Gaine, who he had written for the past three or four days.” Hannam remembers thinking, “Good, I can’t wait to see this show. It sounds great.” Murphy’s response: “So, do you want to play him?”

Murphy says the sparks to cast Hannham came from an outspoken snap. “I saw a picture of (Charlie) paparazzi somewhere. … There was a very Ed about him that day.” Hunnam Deadpans: “I must have had a bad day.”

In working on this role, Hannam says that he read all the books written by Ed Gaine, but many of them were of little use. “They were all sorts of grotesque and incredibly dark writing,” so he turned to a rare and major source. “I was able to access Ed Gaine’s only known recordings made two days after his arrest. It was about an hour and a half interview with him. He is in custody. His musicality and his inflections and his energy could sit down.

As for what we can expect, “This will be a truly human, soft, scratchy, silent, unbanned quest of who Ed is and what he did,” says Hannam. “But it wasn’t what he did, the person he was at the center of it.”

Cast, team, release date

The cast includes Olivia Williams, especially screenwriter and film editor Alma Leville. Addison Ray as Evelyn Hartley, a teenager who disappeared. Susanna’s son as Adeline Watkins. Vicki Creeps as Ilse Koch. And Joey Polari as psycho actor Anthony Perkins.

Executive producers include Murphy, Brennan, Max Winkler, Eric Kobtun, Scott Robertson, Nissa Diede Rich, Louise Shore, Carl Franklin and Hannam. Brennan directed alongside Max Winkler and wrote all the episodes.

Monster: Ed Gein Story premieres on Netflix on October 3rd.
