The new national initiative aims to improve access and inclusion of D/hearing impaired, disabled, NeuroDivergent (DDN) creatives across arts, screens and games.
Equiarts, the creator of the Disabled Creative Collective (DCC), is an annual event that helps DDN Arts workers begin or grow their careers, share their work, become quite recognised and connect with a variety of forms of people.
It will run for the next four years after the group secured federal funding under the Creative Australia bidding process, which is part of Australia’s government equity.
Consulting with the Arts Office and Screen Australia.
The DCC consists of screen practitioners with experience with disabilities. AimeeHuxley (Comprehensive Consulting), Chanel Bowen (Norfolk Pictures), Steph Dower (Dawor Production), Paul Nunali (Comprehensively Made).
To inform you of that work, Equiarts’ first step is conducting surveys of artists and art workers with disabilities (or people associated with the disabled community) and sharing their experience working in the Australian arts industry.
“Responses to our survey will help our community experiences help shape the event throughout the next few years,” said Steph Dower, Equirats Program Manager.
“Your voice will make a difference in inclusive art and accessible practices in the future.”
Margaret Mayhew, Disability Program Manager in Creative Australia, said he is sincerely on seeing national forums and meetings developed by D/D/Deficit and disabled artists and advocates.
“This study will help to plan events that will place D/ear and disabled people at the heart of the arts, screens, games and culture sectors and place people with disabilities at the national level,” she said.
Ken Crouch, Screen Australia Industry Development Manager, added: “Australian screen story is important
It is an inspiring reflection of our country and it is encouraging to see these filmmakers lead inclusive conversations across the arts department. Screen Australia’s support for this research led by Equiarts is an important next step, ensuring that, together with the creative Australian and the Arts office, includes the diverse perspectives and experiences that will enrich screen content and digital games for everyone. ”
