Journalist and presenter Dan Brutier will be rejoining NITV next month as general manager, more than a decade after serving as a reporter for the channel.
Bourchier has recently been a journalist and presenter for ABC and has played a variety of roles over the past nine years. He also spent more than four years at Sky News, following his first stint on NITV in the early 2010s.
With family connections in Victoria, a proud Aboriginal man who grew up in Warmung Country, North Carolina, he is the former chairman of the ABC’s Bonner Committee, a major national advisory body for the broadcaster, and has held governance leadership roles, including chairman of Braakdance, councillor of the University of Canberra Council, and non-executive oversight.
As general manager, Bourchier promotes NITV’s ongoing audience and community impact, working closely across NITV’s senior leadership team and the SBS network. He oversees broadcast and digital strategy, leads daily operations across his portfolio, contributing through selected on-air appearances and public outreach.
This comes after Tanya Denning Orman was appointed SBS Director First Nations earlier this year, leading the network-wide strategy to increase indigenous content, culture and leadership across SBS, including the elevation of NITV at the heart of the network.
Bourchier described his new role as “like going home.”
“NITV started on television as a political reporter in 2010. It’s a privilege to be back now as a general manager,” he said.
“NITV has always been an incubator of talented journalists and storytellers, and today it is investing more than ever in the original Nations programming and collaborates with the First Nations media sector across the country.
“I am excited to work with these incredible people, a team that continues to burn trails that tell stories true to reflect the depth, diversity and strength of our community.
Denning-Orman said he looks forward to working with Bourchier “to share the important work that NITV has to offer with more viewers across the network.”
“Dan brings a wealth of media experiences, strong cultural knowledge and a passion for defending the voice of First Nations. All invaluable as NITV enters this exciting new era,” she said.
SBS TV director Kathryn Fink said the station was pleased to welcome Burtier.
“NITV is stronger than ever. Primetime viewers are growing with declining linear markets, prosperity in digital platforms, a rich pipeline of Indigenous content, and increased commercial revenue,” she said.
“Dan’s leadership builds on this momentum, taking NITV to the next level and keeping its impact felt throughout the media landscape, elevating the First Nations story.”
Bourchier will begin his role on September 29th.
