George Miller’s Juliosa: Mad Max Saga was a big winner at the Australian Production Design Guild Awards on Saturday, wiping out all three nominated categories.
Annet Mackie was recognized for her concept art, with Sophie Nash, Jacinta Leong and Nick Dare taking on the Art Direction Prize and Katie Sharrock winning the Set Decoration Award.
Winners for other feature films of the night include Felicity Abbott, who won the Production Design Award for his work in the Tarot, while Terry Lamela won the costume design gong for Rant. Adam Elliott tasted the Animated Design Award for his Oscar-nominated Snail memoir.
On television, the Production Design Award was awarded to Alex Holmes for Eric, and the Costume Design Award was awarded to Andrew Cox of Lost Boys & Fairy. Courtney Westbrook and Aranelistile won the award for the Production Design or Costume Design for a Short Film, Music Video or Web Series. Nathan Andrew Evans was awarded an emerging designer for the Screen Production Award for an interview with the Hero.
The Artisan Lifetime Achievement Award was sent to prop maker Peter Wyborn. Its long list of credits includes Red Planet, Star Wars Episodes 2 and 3, Matrix Reload and Revolution, Australia, Great Gatsby, Superman Return, Pirates of the Caribbean, Wolverine, Stater, Alien Covent, Pitel’s Alien, Peterobit, Intervoit, Plantet. Wyborn was trained in the UK before moving to Australia and began his career with Createk and Mirage Effects. In 1986, along with Julian Smallwood, he set up Jupiter models and effects, providing props, models and SFX for TVC and films.
The APDG Awards were held at the NSW State Library in Sydney and with presenters such as Screen Australia CEO Deirdre Brennan, Screen NSW executive director Kyas Hepworth, and Powerhouse senior curator Keinton Butler.
