The official trailer arrived for the rental family. Writer Director Hikari (Hellmer in three episodes of Beef and two in Tokyo Vice) and Brendan Fraser’s first major role since his Oscar-winning turn in Whale. It looks like a sweet, quietly quirky setup with a heart felt connection possible, and perhaps a heart string with some tags.

Brendan Fraser plays an actor hired in Tokyo
Set in modern-day Tokyo, the film follows Fraser as a struggled American actor until he stumbles on a rare gig. Whether he pretends to be a brother, friend, or father, the job leads him to an intimate corner of the client’s world. The boundary between performance and reality blurry forces us to navigate both the joy and moral mess of these connections.
The trailer teases moments of gentle humor and vulnerability, as when Takehiro Hira’s character explains the spirit of the company. The thread that has a particular impact sees Fraser’s character being hired to play the father of a young girl.
Cast and creators behind the rental family
Fraser is joined by an ensemble that includes Takehiro Hira (Shogun), Yamamoto Mari (Pachinko), Emoto’s Akira (Shin Godzilla), and newcomer Shannon Gorman.
Behind the camera, Hikari co-written the script with Stephen Blahut (Hikari’s 37-second cinematography director). The production includes producers Julia Lebedev (bad education), Eddie Weisman (wildlife) and Yamaguchi Singh (37 seconds). Cinematographer Ishidabayashi (we are all strangers) and composers Johnsi and Alex Summers add even more promises to the tone and vibe of the film.

The rental family will open at US cinemas on November 21st and at Australian cinemas on December 26th.
