Numbers don’t lie
It is already the best-earning animated film of all time. For now, Ne Zha 2 is raking around the world for 18.9 billion USD to drop the jaws. It’s like Avengers: Infinity War and Spider-Man: Norway Home, and Inside Out 2, and for context, this Chinese fantasy sequel is the eighth largest film currently released. Not animation – feature film, full stop.

Currently, due to distribution from A24 and CMC photos, Ne Zha 2 is coming to English-speaking territory. It will land at the US cinema on August 22nd and at the Australia cinema on August 28th. Also on board: Vincent Rodriguez III, Alex Le, Damien Haas and Crystal Lee.
“I am honored to be part of Ne Zha 2, a landmark of Chinese animation and a powerful reminder of how universal our stories are,” Yeoh said in a statement that the English release was announced. “It’s a great joy to share this with your audience in English. Everyone can’t wait to experience the wonders, heart, epic artistry and magic of this film on the big screen.”
Myth, Magic, Major Scale
Written and directed by Yang Yu, the film continues the story of Ne Zha, a powerful child feared by the gods. Ancient Taoist myths believe that they encounter large-scale fantasy action. The film took five years to produce and featured over 4,000 artists from 138 studios.
And while it’s one thing at the box office, it’s critical and fan response differently. The film currently holds the highest rated animation score on Rotten Tomatoes (96% from critics and 99% from audience) and sits near the top of the most preferred title in the 2025 Letterbox.
