The grid is breaking through. The first official trailer for Tron: Ares has arrived, bringing a new chapter in the Disney sci-fi franchise, immersed in neon. Watch the official trailer above and read everything we know about the much-anticipated sequel.
Meet Ares: Designed to fight, and begin to think
Oscar winner Jared Leto leads the third Tron film as Ares, a next-generation program built within the grid, unleashing himself into the human world for the first time. Created to become a super soldier, Ares is featured by high-tech magistrate Julian Dillinger (Evan Peters), who pitches his inventions for military use.
“A lot of stories about AI and big technology today. The virtual world, what will they look like when we get there? Well, we don’t go there. They’re here.” “I want you to meet Ares, the ultimate soldier. He’s biblically strong, lightning fast, very intelligent, and if he gets hit on the battlefield, I’ll make you something else.”
That level of control doesn’t work for everyone. Gillian Anderson character Elizabeth Dillinger – Julian’s mother said, “Do you think you’re in control of this? I don’t think you’re that.”
And areles? He’s starting to ask his own questions. “I’m looking for something. Something I don’t understand.”
Flynn is back. The rules may not be
Quietly important, obviously, Jeff Bridges has returned as Kevin Flynn, the original grid architect. He confronts Ares directly: “A malfunction program that makes you want to live. Why is that so?”
Ares’ answer is simple: “It’s just a feeling.”
Flynn’s reply? “Amazing.”
The exchange suggests a film that is packed with action and visual sights, but may come to ideas about identity, agency and what happens when artificial life begins to feel something more.
Bigger Stakes, Real World Scale
Unlike previous films, Tron: Ares brings a fight to our world from the grid. However, the high-tech noir style remains the same. The light cycle runs through city streets, programs jump over digital architecture, and physical digital lines are even more ferocious than ever.
The trailer also introduces Gretary’s character Eve Kim. Eve Kim appears to form a connection with Ares as she navigates unfamiliar terrain. And yes, the blue and red program conflicts seem to continue where Tron: Legacy was ruled out.
System sound
Nine Inch Nails win the movie. Not only as a composer, but as a band. The trailer debuts its first new single in five years, “As Alive You Need Me Be In Inserted,” with the full soundtrack arriving on September 19th.
