“Retirement” and “Penguin”
The 2025 Emmy Award nomination has arrived. And together with them, a deck of competitors landed, reflecting both the evolutionary state of television and the industry’s appetite for fresh blood.
Shows like The Pitt, The Studio, and Adolescence have rocked longtime favorites, created space for new guards in storytelling, and embraced muscles in key categories. Apple TV+’s retirement went back after a long break and led the pack with 27 nominations, regaining its place in the race after missing last year’s eligibility window. Behind it is Penguins, White Lotus and the studio form a lively and prestigious favorite trio.
Apple, HBO and Netflix dominate, but in many ways
Apple TV+ and HBO are continuing their continued tug-of-war for Emmy’s domination, but Netflix splashed with 13 nominations in adolescence despite a quiet year. This is a solid show for adult thrillers who could become a sleeper hit and dominate a limited series category. Meanwhile, Monsters: The story of Lyle and Eric Menendez and the Black Mirror also saw strong support landing in double digits. In comedy, the studio emerged as a force to consider thanks to Seth Rogen’s triple threat role as an actor, writer and director.
Notable snubs include squid games, poker faces and Taylor Sheridan shows
As always, some omissions quickly sparked debate. The Squid game was completely locked out, including the widely anticipated nod of breakout character Thanos. The poker face was also largely ignored, and Natasha Lyon missed out despite the fact that he had the show fixed. The White Lotus received the love of the regular ensemble, but not for Patrick Schwarzenegger. Other famous snubs included Handmade Tales, Black Dubs, and the Four Seasons.
The overall slate of Taylor Sheridan’s eligible drama failed to crack major categories. Despite the efforts and star power of famous campaigns such as the Mayor of Kingstown Landman and the final season of Yellowstone, as well as the efforts and star power of famous campaigns such as Helen Mirren, Harrison Ford and Billy Bob Thornton. Landman, considered Sheridan’s best chance this year, has been empty. Some technical nods went to Tulsa King, Lioness, and 1923, but the main areas remained elusive.
Rules change and more open Emmyfield
Elsewhere, Imogen Faith Reid has been overlooked for her complicated performance in the Good American Family, and also ruled out Renée Zellweger’s return as Bridget Jones, a TV movie-looking figure. Pedro Pascal’s last nomination for us drew some debate considering his early seasonal departure and limited screen time. This is yet another example of how category placement can cause conversations that are as high as the nomination itself.
One of the behind-the-scenes shifts could have played a role this year. The TV Academy has introduced new eligibility rules that restrict actors from being submitted to guest categories if they have already been nominated for leads or support the same role. It’s a subtle adjustment, but it aims to curb strategic category shifts. Whether these nominations reflect a true change in taste or simply a temporary reorganization, 2025 Emmy has felt for years to be more open and unpredictable.
When is the 2025 Emmy Awards?
