Following the fascinating teaser trailer announced in May, Apple TV+ has dropped an exciting official trailer for Chief of War, a Jason Momoa-led action drama series set in late 18th century Hawaii. Please see the trailer above for more information.
Momoa plays Kaiana, a respected fighter known as “our people’s first,” and stands at a crossroads of tradition and invasion. “If this island is split, this kingdom will fall,” he warns early in the trailer, setting the tone of the story, driven by cultural heritage, loyalty and resistance. Once the trailer is over, our warrior emphasizes the weight of what he is fighting for. “Tomorrow we will face God and man to build a kingdom. Whatever happens to me, this is your home.”
The war chief, co-created by Momoa and Thomas Paaa Sivet, both indigenous heritage, is told through the lens of Indigenous peoples and features a primarily Polynesian cast. Among the ensemble is Lucian Buchanan, Temuera Morrison, Cliff Curtis, Thea O Hanepehinga, Kaina McAh, Moses, Siua Ikaleo, Brandon Finn, James Udom, Maine Kinimaka, Te Kohe Tuhaka and Benjamin Hegges.
Chief of War is produced by Apple TV+ in collaboration with the fifth season and Chernin Entertainment. Doug Jung (Star Trek Beyond) will serve as a showrunner, with Justin Chon (Pachinko, Blue Bayou) directing the first two episodes, with Momoa directing the finale (the second script director credit after 2014’s Indie Film Road to Paloma). Executive producers include Momoa, Sibbett, Chon, Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, Tracey Cook, Brian Andrew Mendoza and others.
Adding weight to the series, already a substantial production lineage is Hans Zimmer. He composed themes and co-produced the scores with James Everingham between them and bleeding finger music.
It premieres the war globally on Apple TV+, hosting its first two episodes on August 1st, with episodes each week until September 19th.
