Marvel Studios has dropped a new clip from Fantastic Four: First Steps, featuring the Silver Surfer from Julia Garner and the delivery of Galactus’ impending prophecy, the imminent arrival of Galactus.
Silver surfers descend from the sky and convey a cold message to our superheroes and people of Earth. “Are you a guardian of this world?” she asks the Fantastic Four. Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby) replies, “Yes, that’s right.”
“Your planet is now marked for death. Your world is consumed by greedy people,” declares the Silver Surfer. “There’s nothing you can do to stop him, because he is a universal force as essential as the stars.” While she continues, everyone watches silently: “Hold your loved one closely and speaks the words you’ve been afraid to speak.” Sue and Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal) look at each other with concern.
The clip ends with the horrifying declaration of the Messenger. “I tell him the beginning, I tell you the end for you. I tell you…Galactus.”
This scene shows the character’s otherworldly existence, with a proper look at Garner’s Sharaval, a little-known silver surfer variant in the comic. It is a clear view of the universe’s characters, and an impressive departure from the depictions of the past.
Another type of herald
Garner spoke to Entertainment Weekly in April about her casting and how she surprised her. “I was confused because I was like, ‘Wait, isn’t Silver Surfer a guy?'” she said. “Then (director Matt Shakman) explained to me that it was actually Sharabal and it was all that.”
She added that there is deliberate ambiguity in the version of the character she plays. “She’s a Galactus Herald, so she works for Galactus, but I don’t know where she is standing… is she standing with her boss or is she doing what she said?” Garner explained. “She has this mystical energy about her, and slowly the mystery is resolved along with the audience.”
Space reboot approaches
The film is directed by Wandavision Helmer’s Matt Shakman, starring Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm and Ebon Moss Bachach as Ben Grimm. As for Galactus, Cosmic Entity is played by Ralph Inneson.
Already now! The First Step marking the first chapter of Phase 6 of the Fantastic Four: Marvel Cinematic Universe is scheduled to open in Australian cinemas on July 24th and in US films on July 25th.
