The trailer arrived for Hell or High Water Director David Mackenzie’s upcoming thriller, Relay. Please read the trailer above and read the information.
Riz Ahmed leads the film as Tom. Tom is a calculation “fixer” who specializes in brokering secret transactions between whistleblowers and powerful companies they are threatening to expose. However, his latest client, Sarah (Lily James), is marked for death, and due to the desperate need for protection, Tom’s carefully managed anonymity begins to crumble.
The film reunites Mackenzie. Mackenzie nodded Oscars on morally grey material starring the outlaw/king, including an underrated sense of perfection, and gained hell and high water. Written by Justin Piasecki (from a longtime black list script), the relay features Mackenzie tapping on old-fashioned paranoia with a modern twist. “It’s like a strange way to avoid surveillance, and I think this is just fascinating,” Mackenzie told Indywire. “Old technology also feels that way in the DNA of this project and resonates a bit with it coming back to such a cool ’70s thriller.”
The relay conducted mainly positive reviews at TIFF 2024 and currently holds a score of 81% on rotten tomatoes. It was also recently shown at Tribeca 2025.
The trailer highlights Ahmed’s almost wordless performance. This is a suppressed turn that reflects the film’s quiet tension. “This is not an AI of concepts like the Internet,” Ahmed told Indiewire. “Undoubtedly, one of the most distinctive aspects of it is how the main character communicates, or doesn’t. From an acting perspective, it was really exciting for me.”
In many of the first acts, Ahmed’s character remains silent and unknown. It’s only when the layers are peeling that the audience begins to understand who he really is. It’s a journey that invites viewers to take with careful pacing and quiet revelation. “When it all comes together, it’s important that you really understand who he is, what his background is and how such kinds form part of the puzzle,” Ahmed added.
Sam Worthington, Victor Gerber, Jared Abrahamson, Willa Fitzgerald and Matthew Maher concluded the cast. Filmed by Giles Nutzgens (Hell or High Water, Enola Holmes).
The relay will open in US cinemas via Bleecker Street on August 22nd. The Australian release date has not been confirmed yet.
