The first trailer arrived for Bgonia, the latest off-beat offering from Yorgos Lantimos and his frequent collaborator Emma Stone. Based on the 2003 Korean cult film Save the Green Planet! (See the Bonker trailer here), the upcoming sci-fi dark comedy appears to be another quirky chapter in Lantimos’ growth catalogue. Please see the above for more details.
An alien plot, or two guys who lost it?
The film is sure to be an alien secretly plotting to destroy the Earth, following a young man who is obsessed with two plots luring a powerful corporate CEO. That logline alone provides hints of the strange energy this is aiming for. The trailer does little to make things clearer. That’s a good thing.
Jesse Plemons and newcomer Aidan Delbis are the duo determined to defeat this extraterrestrial threat. Alicia Silverstone and comedian Stavros Halkiass conclude the cast.
Lanthimos is leaning towards absurdity
This marks the fifth collaboration with Lanthimos’ Stone (fond of favourites, poor things, kindness, and burritos in short films), and while Bugonia appears to be the thematic departure, it is still shaped by his distinctive visual and tonal style. The trailer hints at something that spans deadpan comedy, psychological anxiety, and utter absurdity. The script adaptation comes from Will Tracy, who wrote the 2022 dark comedy satire on the menu.
Behind the camera are longtime Lantimos collaborators, including editor Yorgos Mabloposaridis, cinematographer Robbie Ryan and composer Jersskin Fendrix. The film is produced by Lanthimos and Stone along with film directors Ali Astor, Lars Knudsen, Ed Guiney, Andrew Lowe, Mikey Lee and Jerry Kyungbom Koh.
Details will be released
Bugonia will open on October 24th for limited engagement before its wide release on October 31st. No Australian releases have been confirmed yet.
