The official trailer was released for Roofman, a crime drama featuring Channing Tatum, based on the absurd, true story of a man who once avoided capture by an untested life within Toys ‘R’ Us. You can find out more below by looking at the trailer above.

True Crime Story with Twisted Charm

Tatum starred as former Army ranger Jeffrey “Roofman” Manchester, and escaped a prisoner embarking on a string of late-night robbers by slashing through the roofs of over 60 McDonalds. When he escapes from law enforcement, he literally hides quite a bit in the walls of a toy store.

The trailer introduces a lonely man navigating a double life in and out of public vision, trying to maintain his secret presence. Things get complicated when he collapses due to Lee Waynescott, the divorced mother played by Kirsten Dunst.

It’s a strange, dark, cartoon set-up, marking a brighter, more comedic departure from director Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine, across the Pines).

Tatum on the pressure to portray real people

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Tatum talked about the unique pressure to portray Jeffrey Manchester. “It’s impossible to tell someone’s real story in 90 minutes,” he said. “I’ve only played two other real people in my life, but that’s not very comfortable. I feel a lot of pressure. It gets muddy.” Tatum played wrestler Mark Schultz in Foxcatcher and Pretty Boy Floyd in the public enemy of bank robbery.

Tatum never met Manchester in person, but he had been talking to him over the phone for a long time. “I really hope Jeff loves movies,” Tatum said. “He made some bad decisions in his life. That’s true. But he is probably the first to tell you that. But I find him a very beautiful and unhappy soul. It breaks my heart. He is so clever, even on the phone.”

The production included many real people from Manchester’s life, including the preacher and the man who drove trucks in prison. “When you’re around some of these real people, all of a sudden it becomes very, very realistic. It puts pressure on you to pay attention,” Tatum pointed out.

Regarding his work with Cianfrance, Tatum said:

“We first signed that there is no unsafe place,” he continued. “We do take when it’s written. We do take that was silent. We do take like Jerry Lewis. We went over the map and we weren’t wrong. It created a real vulnerability location.”

Cast and release date

The ensemble cast includes Ben Mendelshorn, Lake Shustanfield, Juno Temple, Peter Dinklege, Melonie Diaz, Uzoaduba and Jimmy O. Yang. The script was co-written by Cianfrance and Kirt Gunn, and Tatum and Cianfrance are also executive producers.

Roofman will open at US cinemas on October 10th and at Australian cinemas on October 16th.
