Schwartz is back. And nearly 40 years later, Spaceball finally won a sequel!
Amazon MGM Studios has confirmed that Spaceballs 2 is officially moving forward. Melbrooks returned to reprise his role as yogurt nearly 40 years after the original film first blew the Space Opera/Sci-Fi genre. The much-anticipated sequel is set for a theatrical release in 2027.
“Non-Preculle Non-Re-Reboot Sequel Part 2”
The plot details remain firmly under the wrap, but the project fully embraces the roots of self-awareness. As Amazon MGM explains, SpaceBalls 2 is “a non-precle non-re-luboot sequel part 2, but uses a reboot element franchise extension film.”
In a video promoting the announcement below, Brooks jokingly states: “40 years from now, ‘What do fans want?’ But instead, we’re making this film. ”
Stars and new additions
As reported in Deadline, Bill Pullman has been confirmed to return as a lonely star, with Rick Moranis changing his role as the villain’s dark helmet. Moranis’s return is particularly notable, marking one of his few live-action appearances in nearly 30 years.
Participating in return stars is a number of new cast members. Cake Palmer got into the film in a private role, and also signed by Bill Pullman’s son, Lewis Pullman. Josh Gad will star in the same way. This adds to his role as a co-writer and producer.
The team behind Spaceballs 2
The sequel will be directed by Josh Greenbaum, known for Barb and Star Go. The script comes from Benji Summit, Dan Hernandez and Josh Gadd. Samit and Hernandez have previously written projects such as rebuilding Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, Pokémon Ketective Pikachu, Addams Family 2, and Lego Star Wars: Galaxy.
GAD previously teased the project in 2024 and posted it on Instagram. “I think it’s the most interesting and best thing I’ve ever worked on. I think I’m very excited. Working with my boys @cubanmissiledh and @benjisamit is also heaven and many other planets on Earth.
The film is produced by Jeb Brody for Brian Grazer and Jeb Brody from Imagine Entertainment alongside Gad, Brooks and Greenbaum. Kevin Salter, Adam Merims, Samit and Hernandez will serve as executive producers.
Revisiting the cult classic
Originally released by MGM in 1987, Spaceballs became a cult favorite with its insulting parody of Star Wars, Aliens and other sci-fi franchises. The original followed by The Lonely Star (played by the late John Candy), Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga), and Dot Matrix (voiced by Joan Rivers). The film returned to a modest box office gross during its first run, but its reputation grew over decades.
Now 99, Brooks, who is 99, has returned to the world he created and added another chapter to his legendary comedy career, including classics such as the Burning Saddle, the Producer, Young Frankenstein, Robin Hood: The Tights Men, and World History. Part I.
Amazon MGM hasn’t set an exact release date yet, but Spaceballs 2 is currently set to hit the big screen someday in 2027.
