ABC, SBS, Australia’s Community Broadcasting Corporation and production company Drama Queen are one of the organisations that take on internships as part of the NSW government’s creativity program.
Delivered through Create NSW, Sound NSW and Screen NSW, the initiative is designed to open doors for creative practitioners with disabilities and D/D/deaf people, and to promote paid internships in hands-on roles in paid arts, screens, music and cultural workplaces.
Twelve interns completed their placement across 11 host organizations this year, marking the largest cohort ever.
Screen NSW Head Kyas Hepworth said stronger participation, expression and diversity in the screen industry will ensure true inclusion and allow people to see the light of day.
“From the start, the NSW screen industry has embraced this groundbreaking program,” she said.
“Our host organization finds the program rewarding and has come backs every year. We are pleased that so many doors are open to the screen sector through our internships.”

The latest economic study of Australian professional artists (Throsby and Petetskaya 2024) found that 16% of professional artists live with disabilities, and that disability artists experience unemployment at a higher rate than non-disabled artists.
Accessible Art CEO Liz Martin said in the Createability Internship program, a model for the national pilot scheme.
Strength was directed from strength to help participants build networks and skills to pursue a long-term professional career.
“The success of the Createability Internship program can be attributed to a great host organization that openly embraces opportunities and an incredible internship that brings so many passions and talent,” she said.
“I look forward to marking this year’s intern on the field of choice.”
