“Really Intimidating”: Pedro Pascal tackles Reed Richards’ role in Marvel’s “Fantastic Four.”

Pedro Pascal faces dragons, bounty hunters and infected apocalypse survivors. However, according to the actor himself, Marvel’s Reed Richards, aka Mr. Fantalues, may have been his most difficult role.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly during a set visit for Fantastic Four: First Steps (it’s a good read), Pascal revealed the weight of expectations that come with participating in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “It was really intimidating,” he admitted. “Every time I stepped into the world with high expectations, I felt I couldn’t put the last one on top of how intimidating it was.”

Pascal, who previously left marks for Game of Thrones, The Mandalorian and The Last Of Us, has been challenging with characters like Reid in his longtime fans whilst keeping his performance authentic. “I want to make people happy, especially when it’s widely known for certain expectations, but I want to be authentic to myself, which is also the best thing for anyone who wants to entertain stories or travel to this world.”

In the first step, Reid leads Marvel’s first family through 1960s alternative earth adventures inspired by retro-futurism and classic science fiction. But even “the wisest man in the universe” may become obsolete when the universe’s entity Galactus arrives. “It’s definitely the scale of a threat that Reid has never experienced,” Pascal said. “Even the smartest people in the world have West respect for beings who like to understand time.”

While taking on the brain and beloved role when Reed Richards is enough to make the actor he is, Pascal says he found an unexpected relief shortly after talking to director Matt Shakman (Wandavision). While walking with a friend, he was interrupted by a permanent voice from the lemonade stand: “What are you doing here?” It turns out to be Shakman’s daughter.

“Literally, on Sunday (Shakman and I) met to talk about the project,” Pascal said. “And I literally said, ‘This isn’t what I expected to happen, but I think I have to do it.’ Then this happened and when we left with the lemonade my friend said, ‘I think you’re doing it!’ ”

Pascal leads the cast alongside Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Evon Moss Bachalach. Together, they bring Marvel’s first family to the MCU’s multiverse. Fantastic Four: First Step will host Australian cinemas on July 24th and US cinemas on July 25th.
