The latest chapter in Magic: The Gathering has arrived. Today’s pre-release event will be on sale today, with the set officially being released on April 11th, 2025. Tarkir: Dragon Storm is when a dragon rules the sky. Quickly dive into this new MTG set.
In this set, Tarkar is destroyed by a massive Dragon Storm, defeating the old Dragon Lord and giving birth to a powerful Spirit Dragon that plunged five clans into war. In the midst of chaos, Naarsett and Elspeth fight to contain the storm, but Sarkhan Vol opposes them. Meanwhile, Jace searches the realm of meditation for anything that could threaten the entire multiverse.
Tarkir: DragonStorm introduces two new dragon-themed mechanics, with dragons. This allows you to remake the spell when playing the dragon.
The set also marks the return of five Tarkir clans, each with their own playstyle and unique keyword abilities.
Endure, the Abzan (white, black, green) keyword focuses on counters. When playing creatures with players, you may add n +1/ +1 counters or create n/n spirit tokens. Flurry, The Jeskai (blue, red, white) keywords allow for mini combo turns with multiple spells. A card with Flurry triggers an additional effect when casting the second turn. Update, Surutai (Black, Blue, Green) keywords allow players to magically put cards out of the graveyard into exile as magic for fun and profit. To update, use mana to invoke the card asylum for powerful results. The Mobilize, Mardu (Red, White, Black) keywords aim to boost a wider strategy for the turn. Creatures mobilized on attack create more attackers with threats that are sacrificed at the beginning of the next end step. Harmonize, Temur (green, blue, red) keywords are about large creatures that reduce costs. You can cast a harmonious cost-matched card from the graveyard, tap on an undeveloped creature you control, and pay for its power with general mana.
Each of the five clans has its own Commander deck, allowing you to start playing quickly with your favorite faction. There’s something for everyone, with a variety of play styles to choose from. As a fan of the hugely shaking creatures (cough phobia), which hit hard, the Gebaki clan is just above my alley.
Like all magic sets, Tarkir: Dragonstorm offers exciting chase cards for those who pick up a collector booster. For players who want to add unique treatments to their decks and collections, expect some stunning new textured dragon scale foil fetchlands, dragon cards, ghost fire foils and more. The serialized retro frame cards, limited to just 500 copies, also return to collectors in search of super rare hits.
Additionally, this set introduces one of my favorite new land designs: Dragon Aiful Art Land. I will definitely chase the set to complete a dragon-themed deck.
Tarkir: Dragonstorm is becoming one of the most exciting magical things. It brings you a stunning new card treatment like this year’s gathering set, the thrilling dragon mechanic, the revival of the Tarkir clan, and the Dragon Scale Foil. The set will be released at MTG Arena on April 8th and will be available for tabletop play around the world on April 11th.
