Kiwi comedy Stepdave is remade in Malaysia

New Zealand’s Stepdave is set for yet another international remake. This time we’re using the Malaysian Mandarin language version.

Distributor All3Media International has inked a scripted deal with content and entertainment company Astro. This is a 10-part series that will air later this year and was produced in collaboration with production company Phosumpro.

It is centered around a carefree 24-year-old bartender that life is turned upside down when Stepdave falls to his three sophisticated 39-year-old mother.

Originally produced in 2014 by a photo of the South Pacific on New Zealand TV2, the Malaysian version marks the fifth international iteration. Other territorial remakes include Greece, Hungary, Poland and Ukraine, but in 2017 the US version was developed by NBC.

Kate McDermott is the creator of the Kiwi Original and was cancelled after two seasons. Jono Kenyon and Sia Trokenheim led the cast.

“Astro is an incredible partner and following the success of Malaysia’s (UK Series) Liar adaptation, we are excited to work with them again in Stepdave, a dynamic new romantic comedy.

“We are pleased to work with the talented team of Inn (producer) and Mai (director) whose expertise in strengthening local adaptation shines through in this comedy drama. We believe Stepdave will resonate strongly with the Astro audience.

Content from Astro Director at Agnes Rozario said Step Dave is “a fresh story of love that is uninterrupted by age and practices that are more relevant in our world today.”

“This collaboration reflects our commitment to providing extraordinary storytelling, backed by rich characters featuring Malaysian top-tier talent, in order to enhance production values and improve audience entertainment experiences and engagement.”
