Good news for fans of the Netflix series running points.
Netflix officially renewed its second-season Kate Hudson-led basketball comedy series, marking one of the fastest updates for the streamer on its first year show. The decision came a week after the series debuted on February 27th, earning 9.3 million views during which time it secured Netflix’s top 10 spots in 83 countries.
“We are very pleased to be able to bring season 2 of Running Point to fans of the show,” said co-creator and executive producer Mindy Kaling in a statement provided by Netflix site Tudum. “We still can’t believe the reaction from the audience. Thank you to everyone who has seen it!” Kaling also expanded his gratitude to Netflix, Warner Bros., Lead Star Hudson and executive producers Jeanie Buss and Linda Rambis, saying, “Without (them), there’s no running point.”
Hudson shared the news on a social media video, saying, “Good basketball team owners know when to listen to fans. So we’ve heard you and Netflix did that too. Running Point is officially back in season 2! Thank you to everyone who’s ever seen the show. I’m excited because it’s the reason you can really come back and have another season.”
Inspired by the real-life experiences of Los Angeles Lakers President Jeannie Bass, the series follows Isla Gordon (Hudson), who has entered the world of professional basketball high stakes after a brother scandal forced her to step down as president of the Los Angeles waves. As the new head of family business, ISLA needs to navigate the male-dominated sports industry and prove her worth to skeptical board members, her ambitious siblings and the larger basketball community.
Alongside Hudson, the show’s cast includes Brenda’s song, Drew Tarber, Scott MacArthur, Max Greenfield, Jay Ellis and Justin Theroux. The show’s creative team features Kaling as author and executive producer alongside Ike Barinholtz and David Stassen, with Stassen also serving as a showrunner. Jeanie Buss and Linda Rambis are featured as executive producers.
Although Netflix has yet to reveal details of specific plots for upcoming seasons, season one has been the setting for further drama and comedy conflicts within the wave organization. The release date for the next chapter has not yet been announced.
