Speaking about Canada Connect, Spa CEO Matthew Diener said Australia and Canada share a passion for stories that reflect the people and places of both countries.
“Since the Australia/Canada Co-Production Treaty was established in 1990, more than 70 official co-productions have been documented across genres such as animation, documentaries, dramas and feature films, and many more informal co-productions have been produced,” he said.
“However, this joint production treaty is outdated and desperately needs modernization. The screen industry has changed dramatically over the past 35 years and Australia and Canada must take this opportunity to work together to prioritize renewal of this treaty in order to realize this strong relationship and opportunity from sharing language and values.
“The SPA’s advocacy for more funding for national broadcasters ABC and SBS and national screen agency Screen Australia is also a key step in building stronger connections between our countries through co-production opportunities.”
CMPA CEO and president Reynolds Mastin said that co-production between Canadian and Australian producers is more than a business transaction.
“There is a strong synergy between our countries that amplify storytelling and expand our combined global reach,” he said.
“This will only be strengthened by the modernization of the Audiovisual Co-Production Treaty between Canada and Australia.”
The SPA Connect Market will be held as part of the screen on the Gold Coast from Tuesday, May 6th to Thursday, May 8th.
