Netflix has released the final trailer for The Electric State, the latest film by directors of Avengers: Endgame, Joe and Anthony Russo. Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt led the cast. Check out the trailer above and see more details below.
Dystopia Road Trip
Based on Simon Stålenhag’s 2018 graphic novel, the film presents an alternative version of the 1990s. There, the war between humans and robots left the world in abandoned form. At the heart of the story is Michelle (Milly Bobby Brown), a young woman traveling through rotten America, with a small yellow robot and a smuggler named Keats (Chris Pratt). Her goal: Find a younger brother. Along the way, she crosses paths with eccentric figures and discovers a larger mechanical plot lurking beneath the surface.
For Russos, films use the familiar storytelling tradition. “The story felt like a fairy tale to us,” Anthony Russo told Netflix’s site Tudum. “We really wanted to play with some very basic aspects of fairy tales,” Joe Russo added: “We grew up with a stable diet of science fiction and fantasy. And our brains are always (there are). Our creative minds can present very interesting themes, but are always drawn to these big fantastical ideas that are very interesting at the same time.”
Expanding the world of electrical state
Stålenhag’s original works are known for their unforgettable retro, future sticky images. The film aims to realize its vision while taking creative freedom. “I was blown away by the movie,” Stålenhag said. “It was a great experience to see something like this coming of life. What resonated with me the most was the emotional core of the film and the need for family.”
Although adaptation takes a broad global approach, the author was involved in the discussions under development. “They asked me about the timeline and the backstory, and that’s their job,” he said. “They are the best in the world for what they do. It’s satisfying and surreal to see them work on projects that come from me. I’m very positively surprised by the end result.”
Large cast and Russo collaborators
The film has quite a few ensembles including Ke Huy Quan (all in every place at once), Stanley Tucci (The Hunger Games), Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), Woody Harrelson (Zombieland), Anthony Mackie (Captaan America: The Winter Soldier), and more. Several cast members have previously worked with Lassos, including Pratt and Mackey.
“We’re drawn to ensembling storytelling,” Anthony Russo said. “Maybe we’re from a large Italian-American family. No matter how small, we think that the character has a very important part of storytelling and we want to see it from the perspective of that character.”
Electrical conditions will be available for streaming on Netflix from March 14th.
