Filmmaker Sean Durkin (Martha Mercy May Marlene, nest) follows Iron Claws and stars Saol Ronan and Austin Butler.
The project is titled Deep Cuts and is based on Holly Brickley’s debut novel of the same name, which was recently published on February 25th.
Durkin is set in the 2000s and writes an adaptation of the book, following two 20 years of music lovers, and two 20 years of music lovers, ambition, belongings, and adult music lovers over the course of that decade.
According to publisher Harper Collins, the official summary of the book is as follows:
When Joe plays Percy one of his songs in his college room in 2000, she quickly realizes three things. Second, she can shape his music into something extraordinary. Third, she will always be on the bystander. She swallows jeal and throws herself into collaboration, turning Joe’s song into an indie hit with ferocious criticism. But there is an undercurrent in the music they make. Undoubtedly, electric is headed towards love. And almost inevitably towards a broken heart. As Joe step into the spotlight, can Percy bear to watch in silence? And can he be there without her? Deep Cut is a fascinating novel about passion and obsession, love and longing, and you need to listen to it more than anything.
Durkin is working with the A24 again after the success of Iron Claw, which became one of the company’s best-selling films in 2023. Along with the lead role, Ronan has also joined the producer, joining the production team, including Central’s Ronald Bronstein and Eribush.
Ronan’s recent projects include the Apple-released World War II drama Blitz and her memoir adaptation, The Autrun. Her next feature is Bad Apple, a comedy thriller, which also stars Jacob Anderson (Game of Thrones, interview with the Vampire). Butler had a 2024 packed starring in Apple’s World War II miniseries of the Air, starring Dennis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part 2 and Jeff Nichols’ The By-Kilaiders. His upcoming projects include Catch Stealing by Darren Aronofsky and Eddington by Ari Aster.
There is no word yet on when the deep cut will be produced, but with Durkin at the helm and two demanded leads, this is something to be seen.
