The 45th Golden Raspberry Awards, also known as The Razzies, was once again in the spotlight of the year’s most critically panned film, with Madame Web leading the pack. Sony’s superhero film won three “wins” including the worst photos, the worst actress of Dakota Johnson and the worst script.
Other notable recipients include Joker: Folly Addies. This brings back the worst sequels and worst screen combos of stars Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, and Jerry Seinfeld and Amy Schumer were “respected” for their Netflix comedy’s Minor production.
Francis Ford Coppola has won the worst manager of his long-time passion project Megalopolis. However, Coppola didn’t take a slight nod from Razzy. Instead, he shared a fiery statement on Instagram, defending his films and criticising the industry’s disgust for risk-taking.
“I’m excited to accept the Razzie Awards in so many important categories at @megalopolisfilm,” writes Coppola. “And because of the unique honor of being nominated for the worst director, the worst script, and the worst photo, few people have the courage to go against the general trends of modern filmmaking! In this shipwreck in this world where art is scored as if professional wrestling, we chose not to follow the brave rules cut by an industry that is so risky that we can’t create a picture that is alive 50 years from now.”
The Godfather and current filmmakers of the Apocalypse added: “I would like to thank all the great colleagues who joined me to create a work of art, Megalopolis. And remind me that the box office is just money, and war, stupidity, politics doesn’t have a real place in our future.”
The bright spot for this year’s ceremony was Pamela Anderson, who was awarded the Razzie Redeemer Award for her acclaimed role in the final showgirl. Anderson had previously been given Razzy for the worst new star in 1996.
