The extraction franchise is expanding, although Chris Hemsworth is not leading. Netflix has announced an 8-episode extraction series set in an action-packed world of hit movies, with Omar SY (Lupine, The Intouchables) getting caught up in the action.
The show introduces SY as a mercenary navigates dangerous hostage rescue missions in Libya. “The series was trapped between the fighting factions and the ruthless murderer,” officially stated, “the series is accused of conflicted and flawed characters, each facing a choice of trauma, betrayal, life or death. It delves into emotional struggles.”
Hemsworth is a badass mercenary in the previous two extraction films, directed by filmmaker Sam Hargrave, produced by Joe and Anthony Russo (Avengers: Endgame, Grayman) and turned stunt coordinator/stuntman I played Tyler Lake. Both Russos and Hargrave are joining the series as executive producers along with Agbo (the film and television production company led by Russos) Angela Russo-Otstot, Scott Nemes and Chris Castaldi.
The series’ writer, showrunner and executive producer is Glenmazzara. Many of its TV credits include the Walking Dead, Shield and Rookie.
“I’m a very lucky guy,” Mazzarra said in a statement provided by the Netflix site Tudum. “Omar is a huge talent. Joe, Anthony and Angela welcomed me into the Agbo family. The Netflix team is the best I’ve ever worked for. I’m certainly very fortunate.”
Angela Russo-Otstot, Agbo’s Chief Creative Officer, highlighted the ambitions behind the expansion. We were inspired to tell more stories in this global franchise and explore more heroic yet flawed mercenaries who illuminate universal themes. Glenn Mazzarra is truly excelling in the field of genre series and is excited to have the exceptional talent of Omar SY at the heart of his action-packed, multi-tasty mission. ”
Extraction Universe is just one of several projects Agbo has developed for Netflix, starring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt along with Gray Man and the upcoming sci-fi film The Electric State.
In the case of SY, this marks another well-known Netflix collaboration following his rave reviewed lead role in Lupine, one of the platform’s biggest non-English hits.
