In a somewhat unexpected collaboration, Martin Scorsese is about to direct a crime drama starring outside of Dwayne Johnson. Also participating in the well-known projects are Leonardo DiCaprio and Emily Blunt, both of which are attached to the production alongside Scorsese and Johnson.
The developing script, written by journalist and author Nick Billton, is based on a true story and described as an epic of Goodfellas and the dead vein mob. Set in Hawaii in the 1960s and ’70s, it follows the ruthless, charismatic crime boss Johnson played. The pitch has already set a buzz on fire, with multiple studios and streamers hoping to increase distribution rights.
A long-standing expression of his desire to set films in Hawaii, Johnson has been obsessed with a variety of island-based projects for many years, including films he has not yet accustomed to. This is Johnson’s first time working with Scorsese. Scorsese could be the filmmaker to give former WWE superstars a career-determining role.
It was a deadline when Johnson and Brandt first revealed that they had brought the idea to Scorsese and DiCaprio.
