The 30th Critic Choice Awards brought a mix of expected victory and surprises. Sean Baker’s Anora brought home the best photos. The indie film was on a run in several categories, but left empty-handed until the last minute, securing a significant victory as the awards season continued.
Perhaps among the more unexpected victories of the night, evil manager John M. Chu is for the best director. The hit musical also claimed the best costume designs and best production designs, but its stars Cynthia Eribo and Ariana Grande left without winning. Emilia Perez spent a strong night and won three trophies including Zoe Saldanya’s best support actress, the best foreign language films and the best songs. This substance matches that total, Demi Moore has won the best actress, Coralie Farsey has taken the best original script, and the film has secured the best hair and makeup.
Adrian Brody continues to build momentum in the best actor race, winning the performance of Kieran Culkin in real pain. The film also shared the best comedy honors with Deadpool and Wolverine in a rare tie. Meanwhile, the Challengers won two wins in Best Score and Best Editing, a solid show of the film, which was particularly overlooked by Oscar nominations.
On the TV front, the general ruled, won the best drama series, wiping out all major acting categories in the field. Hack has won three times, including the Best Comedy Series and the Acting Awards by Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder. Baby Reindeer took home the Best Limited Series, earning the Best Supporting Actress, won by Jessica Gunning, and the Penguin won two acting victories by stars Colin Farrell and Christine Millioti.
