Kurt-Lee Arendse scored two tries in South Africa’s 33-7 win in Brisbane in the first leg of the 2024 Rugby Championship, equaling their biggest win against Australia on enemy soil.

The Springboks, who have added New Zealand attack coach Tony Brown to their staff in an effort to play more fluid rugby, will face Joe Schmidt’s error-riddled Australia with Siya Kolisi and Pieter-Steph du Toit. , Kwaga-Smith also scored and scored five tries.

South Africa also beat Australia by 26 points in Brisbane in 2013, winning 38-12.

The Wallabies’ only try on Saturday came from Hunter Paisami late on after South Africa were reduced to 13 men following yellow cards for Malcolm Marx and Marco van Staden.

Australia will look to bounce back next weekend when they host South Africa at Perth’s Optus Stadium.

Australia conceded five tries as South Africa ran out decisive winners in Brisbane

“As a group, we said this is a big game for us to win. I’m proud of the players,” said Springbok captain Kolisi, who dominated the scrum and led 21-0 at half-time. he said.

“We did exactly what we planned for the week. We’re a learning team. Coach Tony (Brown) is trying to get us to play differently offensively.”

“When you’re on top you definitely have to take your chances and we lost some lineouts in key areas so that’s an area we need to improve on.”

“South Africa stole Australia’s energy”

“I have to give South Africa credit, they came out and put us under pressure,” Australia captain Alan Araratoa said after his team’s first defeat under Schmidt.

“We didn’t have the ball for most of the first half. It’s a tough learning curve for our group, but we have to come back together and fight again.”

“They are an incredibly strong team, an experienced team and they won a physical battle,” Schmidt said of South Africa.

“Their breakdown was really strong and they dominated possession and territory in the first half, but it took away a bit of the players’ fitness.

“It would have been great if we could have played a little bit more in the game, but we have a benchmark and where the Springboks are, it wasn’t a huge shock to us.

“That’s where we have to build towards.”
