Matty Healy seems to be subtly digging into Taylor Swift’s tortured poet department on her podcast Doomscroll

It wasn’t a release that shocked the world.

When Taylor Swift’s latest album, The Tortured Poets Department, finally reached our ears in April, fans were treated to an album full of songs denouncing her six-year relationship with Joe Alwyn. I was expecting it.

What we got instead was a 3-month (or 10-year, depending on how chronically online) affair he had with The Robbers frontman Matty Healy in 1975. It was an album with a collection of songs. The Robards singer remained silent at the time, but is now ready to share his thoughts.

The controversial musician appeared on the latest episode of Joshua Citarella’s Doomscroll podcast, “Matti Healy: 21st Century Pop Culture,” to subtly criticize his former friend and partner.

Healy’s band, The 1975, is known for putting a synth-pop sound on songs about struggles with addiction, political issues, and sometimes relationships.

Swift, on the other hand, is known for her lyricism, often writing about her personal experiences with love and heartbreak.

Talking about his upcoming album, Healy said that he thinks it is “uninteresting” to draw musical inspiration from “obvious” sources like “casual romance”.

“A lot of artists become very interested in their own folklore, or they become interested in things that happen outside of their art that people know about. We want to work on that, which makes sense,” he began. .

The Chocolate singer went on to explain that her first album definitely leans more into that, listening to it like a “series of diaries,” adding that she used to write about relationships a lot more than she does now.

“But to be honest, I’ve recorded everything that I don’t know about things that have been said about me or about my casual romantic relationships or whatever it is that I’ve become known for a little bit. Then you’d be kind of lying, ’cause I was famous,” he continued.

“I guess that makes sense, but I’m not interested in that.

“So the idea of making a record about something that happened to me personally, it’ll be about two years old by the time I release it,” Healy said. “I see people doing that, but it’s not fun.”

Now, The Tortured Poets Division was released just a year after Healy and Swift’s breakup, so the timelines don’t exactly line up, but it’s important to note that the timeline doesn’t match up exactly, but it’s not surprising how fans took his comments as criticism of the pop superstar. It’s easy to see how you’ve interpreted it.

Several songs on the album are rumored to be about Healy, but the most perplexing, right down to the title, is the popular hit “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived.”

This appears to be the second time Healy has mentioned the release, with a video of him being asked about his “diss track” by a paparazzi going viral just days after the album’s release.

“My diss track?” he replied. “Oh, I haven’t listened to the album that much, but I’m sure it’ll be good.”
