Mario Party games are often criticized for being light on content, but the latest installment in the series, Super Mario Party Jamboree, aims to address this issue. The third installment of the MP series on Nintendo Switch, this title was recently released on October 17, 2024. Super Mario Party Jamboree is touted by Nintendo to be the “biggest Mario Party game ever” and judging by its price tag, this statement is probably true as it packs in a lot of features. Possibly. For example, the game has a roster of 22 playable characters, the most of any previous entry in the series. In addition to this, Jamboree includes over 110 mini-games, around 37 items, and over 10 modes.

In the world of video games, bigger isn’t always better, but that seems to be the case with Super Mario Party Jamboree. The latest installment in the Mario Party series has received glowing reviews from several outlets. As of this writing, the game is at #81 on OpenCritic, with approximately 85% of critics recommending it. Meanwhile, it boasts a commendable score of 82 on Metacritic, based on 63 critic reviews. These ratings may not make Super Mario Party Jamboree a forerunner for Game of the Year, but it’s still an impressive one, especially when compared to previous major entries in the long-running Mario Party series. is.

Super Mario Party Jamboree has received high praise, especially compared to previous games in the series.

The Mario Party games have had their big ups and downs.

Nintendo has released 18 Mario Party games since 1998, so the series has understandably had many ups and downs over the years. The first game in the series, simply titled Mario Party, was developed by the now-defunct Hudson Soft and received a 78% rating on GameRankings, as well as a score of 79 on Metacritic, when released on the then-Nintendo 64. Obtained. That day. Mario Party 2 and 3 also debuted on the N64 and received similarly decent reviews upon their respective releases. The former received a score of 76 and the latter 74 on Metacritic.

Hudson Soft continued to churn out Mario Party games almost every year during the sixth generation of consoles. Mario Party 4, 5, 6, and 7 were all released in quick succession for the Nintendo GameCube from 2002 to 2005. While most of these games are highly regarded today, their overall rankings at the time weren’t anything to write home about. On Metacritic, Mario Party 4 received a rating of 70, while Mario Party 5, 6, and 7 received ratings of 69, 71, and 64, respectively.

The Mario Party series went into a bit of a slump during the Wii and Wii U generations. Hudson Soft’s last home console MP title, Mario Party 8, received just 62 points on Metacritic. Its successor, Mario Party 9, developed by NDCube, fared a bit better critically, as it received a 74 rating on the site. However, Mario Party 10, the only Wii U exclusive in the series, received harsh reviews from both reviewers and fans in 2015, receiving an overwhelming score of 67 points on Metacritic and 65 points on OpenCritic, and was rejected by retailers. It was only 16% of the total. We recommend it.
