‘The Mummy’ trailer unleashes Lee Cronin’s horrifying reimagining of horror

Warner Bros. has released a big official trailer for Lee Cronin’s The Mummy, a new take on a classic horror monster. Watch the trailer above and read more about this reimagining, which opens in theaters in April.

Not the mom you grew up with

Thrilled by the ferocious energy of The Evil Dead, writer/director Lee Cronin turns to one of horror’s most enduring figures. The story follows the young daughter of a journalist who disappears into the desert without a trace. Eight years later, she is suddenly returned to her devastated family. What should have been a miracle quickly hardens into something seriously wrong.

“What was our daughter doing in a sarcophagus 3,000 years ago?” asks Jack Reynor’s character in the trailer. I heard that there were 57 other kidnapping cases related to the same fear. “How many of them were still alive?”

The key moment comes when we get a closer look at a not-so-healthy-looking Katie. Katie speaks directly to the camera: “Don’t worry, Grandma. Dying is fun.” It’s safe to say, but Grandma isn’t going to have any fun visits.

This two-and-a-half minute trailer is probably a little too much, but it’s definitely a reminder of Cronin and company. I’m aiming for something creepy and visceral. Don’t go into this one expecting to revisit the mummy legend wrapped in classic Universal iconography.

Domestic Nightmares with Investigative Powers

Cronin teased this tonal blend in an interview with IGN. “It’s an insane mashup, but[the film]is almost part Poltergeist and part Seven, but through my lens and reflecting the way I like to entertain people.”

He elaborated further: “I’m definitely an Amblin kid and a Spielberg kid. I was very influenced by that. So when I talk about Poltergeist, what I mean is the home environment and the warmth of family. And when I talk about Seven, what I mean is the dark, investigative perspective and the secrets that exist behind it.”

He also called the film “a very different kind of mummy movie…The movie itself is really a mystery, like a puzzle box, and that was part of my attraction to the movie.” Cronin added, “This movie comes from a completely different place and isn’t even a reinvention of the mummy legend. It focuses on a darker place and does something different with what we think we might already know.”

Cast, creative and release details

The film stars Jack Reynor (Midsommar), Laia Costa (Victoria), Mae Karamawy (Moon Knight), Natalie Grace (Under Wraps 2), and Veronica Falcon (Ozark). Cronin wrote and directed the film, with horror heavyweights James Wan and Jason Blum serving as producers along with John Keville. Executive producers include Michael Clear, Judson Scott, McDara Kelleher, and Cronin.

Behind the camera, Cronin reunites with key collaborators on Evil Dead Rises, including cinematographer Dave Garbett, production designer Nick Bassett, editor Brian Shaw, and composer Stephen McKeon.

release date

Directed by Lee Cronin, The Mummy will be released in Australian cinemas on April 16th and in US cinemas on April 17th.
