Prime Video has released the official trailer for Scarpetta, starring the busy Nicole Kidman as the iconic forensic pathologist played by Patricia Cornwell. Watch the trailer above and read what we know about this highly anticipated film adaptation.
Nicole Kidman stars in dual-timeline crime thriller
Adapted from Cornwell’s best-selling Kay Scarpetta novel (which has sold more than 120 million copies worldwide), Scarpetta finally brings the fearsome coroner to the big screen. Kidman plays Dr. Kay Scarpetta, a relentless and sharp investigator who is the voice of the dead and uncovers truths others would rather keep buried.
The trailer depicts a gruesome murder investigation that forces Scarpetta back into familiar territory, both public and private. The series unfolds over two timelines, depicting her early years as Chief Medical Examiner in the late 1990s and now, back in her hometown, as she resumes her old role while revisiting a career-defining case from 28 years ago. That unresolved chapter looms large, raising the disturbing possibility that her greatest triumph may also be her undoing.
Beyond the forensic details, the series also leans into psychological tension. The trailer hints at frayed alliances, long-simmering grudges, and the emotional cost of pursuing justice at all costs, all wrapped up in the shadow of a serial killer who refuses to stay in the past.
All-star ensemble surrounding Scarpetta
Kidman will co-star with Academy Award winner Jamie Lee Curtis as Scarpetta’s sister Dorothy Farinelli, whose complicated relationship with Kaye is at the center of the drama. Bobby Cannavale plays Detective Pete Marino, Simon Baker plays FBI profiler Benton Wesley, and Ariana DeBose plays Kay’s tech-savvy niece Lucy Farinelli Watson. The dual timeline structure is further enhanced by Rosie McEwen, Amanda Righetti, Jake Cannavale (yes, Bobby’s biological son), and Hunter Parrish, who play younger versions of the main characters.
The series is developed and written by Liz Sarnoff (Barry, Lost), who also serves as showrunner. The film will be produced by Amazon MGM Studios and Blumhouse Television, with Kidman and Curtis serving as executive producers. David Gordon Green (2018’s “Halloween,” “Pineapple Express”) will direct five episodes and will also serve as executive producer.
