Another Mummy movie starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz has been rumored and requested for years. Now that Universal has confirmed the U.S. release date for its next film, we can finally stop treating it like a wishlist item. And yes, the original duo is returning.
Universal plans to release the as-yet-untitled fourth film in the series in U.S. theaters on May 19, 2028. The studio had secured that slot as an “event” title. At this stage, there are no other major releases scheduled for that date, leaving what Universal is positioning as a major theatrical event open.
The plot of the new chapter is kept strictly secret. What we do know is that the project will reunite Fraser and Weisz for the first time in the series since 2001’s Hamunaptra. Fraser starred in the original 1999’s Hamunaptra and returned for Hamunaptra and 2008’s Hamunaptra: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, with Wise starring in the first two films.
Radio silence is at the helm
The film will be directed by Radio Silence, the filmmaking team of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillette, known for “Ready or Not,” 2024’s “Abigail,” and the recent “Scream” series. The screenplay is by David Coggeshall (Orphan: First Kill, Family Plan).
In an interview with Empire, Gillette explained the thinking behind stepping into another legacy series: “Having stepped into ‘Scream,’ our criteria when jumping into another series is that it needs to be special. And[David Coggeshall’s]script really achieves that. It’s so beautiful and comprehensive and scary and fun.”
The Return of the Producer, the History of a Big Franchise
Producer Sean Daniel returns after producing the first three Mummy films and the 2017 reboot starring Tom Cruise. William Sherak, James Vanderbilt and Paul Neinstein will also produce through their Project X Entertainment, with Fraser, Hivemind’s Jason F. Brown and Dennis Stewart serving as executive producers.
Universal EVP Production Development Jay Polidoro and Director of Production Development Jacqueline Garell are overseeing the project for the studio.
In total, the Hamunaptra series has grossed $1.8 billion worldwide. While the 2017 reboot attempt failed to ignite Universal’s broader Dark Universe ambitions, this new chapter heralds a return to the adventurous, character-driven franchise that audiences continue to miss.
Fraser previously teased that “anything is possible”
Before the project’s dates were officially announced, Fraser was asked about the possibility of returning to The Mummy and told Deadline:
“I’m sorry, but I want you to know that I have a solid fan base.”
He also reflected on his continued enthusiasm for the series after meeting fans at a convention event. “We were there to sign autographs and meet fans, and we had a[Q&A]session on stage in front of 3,000 people, and we thought we were rock stars, too. We just kind of walked off stage thinking, ‘Oh, this is going to give us a personality hangover.'” That was a lot of love. ”
With May 19, 2028 now fully on the U.S. release calendar, a long-rumored reunion is no longer speculation. It’s happening.
