Disney Lorcana’s Winter Spell is officially released today, making it the 11th set to reach both TCG and Disney fans. As the name suggests, Winterspell channels a snowy and icy aesthetic, and features some of the most beautiful illustrations to date, along with a ton of new mechanics and combos for players to relive their snowy battles. This set tells the story of a mysterious vine that begins to grow in the Inklands, and Elsa’s brilliance as she attempts to stop its growth with mystical powers. However, this accidentally causes a winter storm to blow through the kingdom, giving some of your favorite Disney characters a crisp new look.
Winterspell also brings some new franchises to the game. Lorcana fans in this set get a more fleshed out selection of Darkwing Duck, everyone’s favorite webbed, cloaked crusader. Sapphire and Steel ink colors are heavily used, creating great synergy between cards in the series and allowing for sneaky damage and ability triggers. Also, many fans have been waiting a full 11 sets for Pocahontas to make her debut, and she’s finally here with stunning, vibrant illustrations, sneaky mechanics, and even an iconic rarity card (which is the best!). Oh, and there are also Christmas-themed cards!
Thanks to Ravensburger, DisneyAUNZ, and Modern Brands, collectors and players were able to check out some of the new cards and playmats available in this set. This Winter Spell offering includes two playmats featuring the iconic “Dragon Fire” scene and Ariel in her Sonic Warrior costume. Both are great looking mattes, Dragon Fire’s color palette is very distinct, and Ariel brings a more minimalist yet bold visual style.
I believe the new cards are some of the best, if not the best, Disney Lorcana illustrations and artwork to date. For collectors, each card is an eye-catcher with incredible detail. Players will also enjoy a variety of new (and returning) mechanics. Underdog characters are available in all ink colors and allow players to play on turn 1 instead of what would normally be a 2 ink cost (or 2 turn character). This means you can make some crazy next turn plays that weren’t normally possible before (check out Amber Angel Underdog and thank me later). A return to core gameplay requires more traditional board wipe actions and abilities. Cards like Raging Storm, an amber ink drawing of Stitch, Lilo, and Nani, are truly “action – exile all characters” board wipes, and characters like the new legend, Wreck-It Ralph – Raging Wrecker, take advantage of the introduction of boosts from previous sets to add even more combo board wipes for Ruby players.
It’s clear that Lorcana collectors and players alike will thoroughly enjoy what Winter Spell has to offer, seamlessly adding something for every type of player and fan. Needless to say, Winterspell will be an incredibly fun set for players (new and continuing) to create new deck constructions and enhance the various ink combinations and deck types that will appear in local leagues and competitive tournaments.
