Chris Hemsworth to appear in “Crime 101” | Amazon MGM
Chris Hemsworth has been cast in a new crime movie, replacing another celebrity. Taron Egerton and Zazie Beetz have already starred in the new Cockroach, which is set in New York.
Written by Jonathan Ames (You Were Never Really Here) and set to be directed by Matt Ross (Captain Fantastic), Cockroach tells the story of a mysterious stranger who ventures into New York’s criminal underworld and slowly transforms into the boss of a major crime syndicate. Producer Andrew Lazar says the project is in the vein of Goodfellas and Scarface, evoking grit, big characters and a career-heavy energy.
The film is an adaptation of the 2007 novel written by William Rushner under the name “Tyler Knox.”
Chris Hemsworth marks new casting change
Deadline broke the news of Hemsworth’s casting, reporting that the Australian star will appear in the film, replacing Channing Tatum, who dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. The project has gone through major changes before, with Egerton being cast in October 2025 to replace Oscar Isaac, who also left due to scheduling issues.
Creative team behind the scenes
Christina Weiss Lurie (Persuasion) will serve as producer alongside Lazar. Heads of the department include Oscar-winning production designer Colin Gibson (Mad Max: Fury Road), Emmy-winning cinematographer Adam Arcapaugh (The Order, The King, Macbeth, Top of the Lake, True Detective) and VFX supervisor Jonathan Dearing (M3gan, The Invisible Man, Upgrade).
Filming is scheduled to begin in April.
Hemsworth’s other projects include Amazon MGM’s Crime 101, Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday, and Amazon’s action film Subversion.
