“Bugonia” | “Sinners”
Nominations have begun for the 83rd Golden Globe Awards, and looking at the 2026 lineup, it’s clear that the Globes are still intent on reinventing themselves. This year’s voting spans 28 categories, including the just-created Best Podcast race, and is a mix of authoritative dramas, quirky comedies, franchise behemoths, and some hilariously left-field contenders vying for space ahead of the January 11 ceremony.
Movie race: directors, franchises, and neon glow
On the film side, voters lean strongly toward director-driven productions. One Battle After Another leads the field as a full-package contender, with a star-studded ensemble, Paul Thomas Anderson, and the recognition of the film itself. Close behind, Joachim Trier’s Norwegian drama Sentimental Value turns an intimate family turmoil into major awards momentum, while Neon cements itself as a power player across the drama, comedy, international and animation categories. At the same time, titles such as Ryan Coogler’s vampire saga Sinners, Guillermo del Toro’s reimagined Frankenstein, and Chloé Zhao’s literary masterpiece Hamnet give the drama field a distinctly auteur flavor.
Of course, it wouldn’t be the Globes without some big spectacle coming into the conversation. The film, box office, and animation sectors have always left the door open for big crowd-pleasers, with films like Avatar: Fire and Ash, Wicked: For Good, KPop Demon Hunter, F1, and Zootopia 2 leaving the franchise’s fandom still with plenty to cheer about. Between the lineup of original songs and scores, each music category also offers some of its own narrative hooks, from Nick Cave entering awards contention with the title track from Train Dreams to stalwarts like Hans Zimmer, Max Richter and Jonny Greenwood returning to the Globe spotlight.
TV, new categories, and a “new” globe
Television remains a crowded battlefield defined by familiar faces and fresh arrivals. While returning blockbusters such as The White Lotus, Severance, Slow Horses and The Bear maintain their dominance in the awards era, newer titles such as The Pitt, Pluribus, Nobody Wants This and Adolescent are making their way onto the ballot paper, complicating easy predictions. Limited and anthology projects are again largely owned by streamers, with Black Mirror, The Beast in Me, Dying for Sex and The Girlfriend all staking out space in one of the season’s most competitive lanes.
Beyond traditional film and television competitions, the Globes’ ongoing transformation is most evident in its new categories. The solo stand-up comedy award and first-ever Best Podcast trophy show that viewers are actually spending their time where they are, headphones on, screens off, and provide new talking points for a show that is trying to distance itself from its scandal-filled past. With campaigning in full swing and a voting body larger and more diverse than in the HFPA era, this year’s nominations feel like another step in the Globes’ attempt to prove it can still throw a party the industry is willing to attend.
