The nominations for the 97th Academy Awards have been announced, and French musical Emilia Perez leads the pack with an impressive 13 nominations. The film broke the record for most nods ever received by a non-English picture.

Hot on its heels are Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist and Jon M. Chu’s Wicked, each with 10 nominations. Corbet’s post-world war epic earned nods in the acting, writing, and technical categories while being a lively adaptation of Broadway Smash. Meanwhile, James Mangold’s Bob Dylan biopitch, a completely unknown Bob Dylan biopic, received a lot of attention by securing eight nominations, including nods for Timothée Chalamet, Edward Norton, and Monica Barbaro. surprised many.

This year’s nominations came as quite a surprise to them. Two international films, Emilia Perez and Brazil’s I’m Still Here, earned spots in both the best picture and best international feature categories. Emilia Perez was widely expected to dominate, but I’m Still Here, a politically charged Brazilian drama, was a more unexpected addition to the top picture lineup. And it’s great to see the Academy recognizing horror films. This substance has an impressive five nominations, including a nod for best picture.

Edward Berger’s Papal thriller garnered eight nominations, but missed out on Berger’s best director nod, reflecting similar scrutiny faced in The Quiet on the Western Front. Similarly, Wicked saw director Jon M. Chu excluded from the best director list despite 10 nominations.

Demi Moore’s momentum from her Golden Globe win placed her at the forefront of best actresses, but the absences of Nicole Kidman (Babygirl) and Angelina Jolie (Maria) raised eyebrows. Inheritance fans will be treated to a look at supporting actors as they discover Kieran Culkin (Real Pain) and Jeremy Strong (The Apprentice) heading for their heads.
