Game publishers are already gearing up for the holiday season, with October packed with blockbuster game releases and some horror classics just in time for Halloween.
Persona fans can enjoy a massive brand new JRPG from the creators of the iconic series that brings a completely different story and setting. A new Batman Arkham game is coming exclusively to VR, giving Nintendo Switch owners a new entry into the Super Mario Party series.
Two more huge franchises will be releasing new games this October. As usual, Call of Duty launches its annual game this month, but this year it’s Black Ops’ turn to get a new entry. Dragon Age fans will finally be able to play Inquisition, the long-awaited sequel to 2014’s Game of the Year.
With quite a few big titles out there, let’s take a look at the best video games releasing in October 2024.
Until Dawn / Sony
This remake of the PS4-era interactive horror drama Until Dawn has been rebuilt and enhanced from the ground up for Sony’s latest consoles and PC. This is a playable slasher horror movie where the decisions you make will determine which of the group of eight characters you control will live or die. Apart from enhanced visuals and sounds, the remake also promises gameplay improvements and new locations to explore.
Silent Hill 2 / Konami
The new Silent Hill 2 is a remake of one of the best genre-defining survival horror games released for PS2 in 2001. While maintaining the feel that made the original game a classic, the remake modernizes the gameplay and features a reworked combat system. We had the opportunity to play the game three hours early. You can read about it in our Silent Hill 2 hands-on preview.
Metaphor: Refantasio / Atlas
From the creators of the recent Persona games, Metaphor: ReFantazio is an all-new JRPG that takes everything fans love about the Shin Megami Tensei spin-off series and brings you a whole new high fantasy world and story. Similar to the Persona games, Metaphor: Refantasio combines dungeon exploration with building relationships with party members to unlock powerful archetypes. A free demo of the game is available on all platforms, and check out the Metaphor: ReFantazio preview for more information.
Super Mario Party Jamboree / Nintendo
Super Mario Party Jamboree promises to be the biggest game in the series, boasting over 110 mini-games and 22 playable characters. For the first time in a Mario Party game, Jamboree will feature a 20-player online multiplayer mode. There are seven playable boards, five of which are new, plus remastered versions of Mario’s Rainbow Castle and Western Land from Mario Party 1 and 2, respectively.
Batman: Arkham Shadow / Meta
Batman: Arkham Shadow is the first new game in the Arkham series in a while, and is the sequel to 2013’s Batman: Arkham Origins. Unlike most other games in the Batman series, this is a VR title released as a Meta Quest 3 exclusive. You will once again take control of the Dark Knight as he battles a new mysterious villain known as the Rat King. The developer promises an authentic Arkham experience with the added immersion of VR.
Sonic x Shadow Generations / Sega
Sonic x Shadow Generations bundles Shadow Generations, a new game starring Shadow the Hedgehog, and a remastered version of 2011’s Sonic Generations. For more information on the 2-in-1 title, check out our Sonic x Shadow Generations preview.
activision
Call of Duty is back with a new installment in the Black Ops subseries, and from what we’ve seen from trailers and previews so far, things are looking promising. Following the disappointment of Modern Warfare 3, BO6 seems poised to offer an improved multiplayer experience and a better story in its solo campaign. The game’s multiplayer mode launches with 16 new maps. For more first impressions, check out our Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 beta preview.
Deck Nine/Square Enix
Ever since Double Exposure was first announced back in June of this year, we’ve had a feeling that the next game in the Life is Strange series would be much darker than its predecessors. This brings back Max Caulfield, the main character from the first game. He is no longer a high school student and is tasked with solving a murder mystery that spans two timelines.
Pokemon TCG Pocket / Pokemon Co., Ltd.
Pocket, the digital version of the Pokémon Trading Card Game, allows players to collect cards and open packs on their mobile phones. The game offers two free booster packs each day, featuring both previously released cards and new Pocket exclusive cards. New immersive cards allow players to dive into a world of carefully selected rare card illustrations. Check out our Pokémon TCG Pocket preview to learn more about the game.
Dragon Age: Veilguard / BioWare / EA
The long-awaited sequel to Dragon Age: Inquisition continues the story of the iconic fantasy RPG after nearly a decade in development. Unlike other games in the series, Dragon Age: the Veilguard does not allow players to import save data from previous titles, but instead allows players to customize the state of the world during character creation. The developer also made sure that this game is an excellent entry point for newcomers to the series. Check out our preview of Dragon Age: The Veilguard to learn more.
