The world’s most famous spy has a new boss. Amazon MGM Studios has finished its legacy of family-owned surveillance with creative control over the James Bond franchise. In a major industry movement, Amazon MGM Studios is creatively controlling the world’s most famous spies, marking the earthquake shift in the franchise, which has long been overseen by producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson.
A new era for bonds
Amazon MGM Studios, Broccoli and Wilson have formed a joint venture to house James Bond’s intellectual property rights, and Amazon MGM Studios is currently creatively controlling the franchise. Broccoli and Wilson remain co-owners, but the daily creative direction of 007 will be overseen by Amazon.
“My 007 career has been around nearly 60 years of incredible years, so I’m back with a James Bond film focusing on art and charity projects. So, Barbara and I I agree, it’s time for our trusted partner, Amazon MGM Studios, to bring James Bond into the future,” Wilson said.
Reflecting the importance of this transition, Broccoli said, “My life is dedicated to maintaining, maintaining and building the extraordinary legacy handed over to Michael and me by producer Cabby Broccoli. I praised the four extremely talented actors who played 007 and the close collaboration with thousands of great artists in the industry. Conclusion that I don’t have time to die and Michael retired from the film That’s why I feel it’s time to concentrate on other projects.”
The shift follows Amazon’s $8.5 billion acquisition of MGM in 2022, and secures a catalogue of over 4,000 movies and 17,000 television shows. Amazon previously won distribution rights for James Bond Films, but this latest move gives the studio a total creative authority over the franchise’s future.
Daniel Craig answers
Daniel Craig, the latest actor to portray James Bond, shares praise for longtime franchise stewards Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli following news of their decision to hand over creative control to Amazon MGM studios I did.
“My respect, admiration and love for Barbara and Michael remains constant and unimagined,” Craig said in a statement to a Hollywood reporter. “I hope Michael has a long, relaxed (and obviously) retirement, and the venture Barbara is trying to do know they are spectacular.
Craig began with Casino Royale (2006) and ended with Do no Time to Die (2021), a critically and commercially successful era that helped redefine modern bonds, and Five James Bonds I found a movie.
Tension, delays and Amazon’s growing frustration
No change in control came out of nowhere. For years, the report suggests tensions between Amazon and bond producers. According to a December 2024 Wall Street Journal report, Broccoli reportedly described Amazon executives as “f****** idiot” to their colleagues, and was a star wars and Marvel-style film. We are seeking an expansion of storytelling in space. A stubborn traditionalist, Broccoli has long resisted spinoffs and quick fire sequels, believing that Bond should be a carefully crafted standalone spectacle rather than a content machine.
Meanwhile, Amazon reports that it is becoming increasingly unstable. The 007 franchise has been in Limbo since the time of death (2021) with director, script and most importantly new bonds. Despite countless rumors surrounding Daniel Craig’s potential alternative, nothing concrete has come to fruition.
That lack of momentum could have been an escapee. As Variety points out, Amazon has spent billions of dollars on obtaining MGM, but up until now it has been pretty much on the sidelines when it comes to Bond’s future. Amazon is now taking matters into their own hands because broccoli was reluctant or impossible to quickly track the next stage of 007.
Who will pilot the ship?
One of the biggest questions right now is who will oversee Bond’s future under Amazon MGM Studios. Industry insiders point out Amazon’s film director Courtney Valenti as a possible key player. Previously, Warner Bros Valenti has a background in managing major franchises like Harry Potter, but Bond’s unique history and fame means that this role requires a producer with a deep understanding of the brand .
Then there’s Scott Starber, who previously led the Netflix film division and now runs United artists. His experience with studio strategy could be a strong candidate to guide the next iteration of the franchise.
However, Bond is different from other franchises. It is an institution and a heritage passed down over generations. The deadline cites sources within the bond’s “family” expressing concern over the transition, with one insider comparing the news to “family death.” For decades, Broccolith curated not only the Bond films, but the entire culture surrounding them.
Does Amazon shake (or mix) the bond formula?
The biggest unknown is that Amazon MGM Studios actually does Bond because it has completely creative control.
More frequent release schedules? Spin-off show? MoneyPenny’s first part? AQ Origin Story? A reality show? (Ah, wait, they’ve already done it.) According to Variety, Amazon executives have seen the possibilities of a wider bond universe, like Marvel and Star Wars, and have already made the franchise a core film Brainstorms how to expand beyond.
But will Bond fans accept that?
Broccoli’s approach may have been slow, but it maintained its level of fame. Films like Skyfall and Casino Royale were more than just blockbusters. They were action films of fame that balances high octane sights with serious storytelling. Wrong moves – Too many commercializations, too many unnecessary spinoffs can damage the carefully maintained images of the franchise.
Searching for new bonds and new directions
Even when Amazon is at the helm, one important question remains unanswered.
It is no secret that searching for Daniel Craig’s successor was a process that was drawn out. Names like Aaron Taylor Johnson and Henry Cavill have been tossed, but no serious frontrunners have appeared. One Deadline source suggested that if Broccoli had found a “blindly obvious new guy,” she might have continued to lead the franchise. But that didn’t happen.
The source added: (…) I think that’s a new journey first. This will have to happen with new management teams. But these things don’t happen when you don’t have time to Spector, Skyfall, or die. They are gold standard, and what is the price of gold now? โ
Without a clear creative direction, Amazon faces tough challenges. Bond’s identity has been meticulously shaped for decades, and a renewal that has not been rushed to carry out could alienate long-standing fans.
The Future of Bond – Dangerous but Inevitable Change
James Bond is one of the most successful and enduring franchises in film history, winning more than US$7.8 billion with 25 official films. As Amazon MGM Studios is currently in charge, the future path is uncertain.
For better or worse, the next chapter of 007 is determined by the corporate giant, not by the “family business” operations. Some may view this as a natural evolution of modern franchises, while others may fear it will lead to more stylized and commercially driven bonds.
If it’s controlled by Amazon MGM Studios, the question isn’t just who the next bond will be.
